Reducing the harms associated with alcohol and other drug use requires involvement from all sections of the community.

Access to culturally appropriate alcohol and other drug information can be difficult for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities. DAMEC provides advice and consultancy on the development of multilingual or plain English language resources, and brokers relationships between CALD groups and service providers to enhance health literacy and service access.

DAMEC also responds to AOD-related needs identified by CALD communities through activities such as targeted media campaigns, community education sessions, and bilingual/community worker training, in partnership with local communities, Government and non-Government organisations.

Some of DAMEC’s current and past projects include:

  • Running drug and alcohol information sessions for Pacific Islander families
  • Developing a toolkit to assist workers and community groups partner with African communities to reduce alcohol-related harms
  • Translation of the SMART Recovery handbook into Vietnamese
